Arm it every night and every time you leave, even for a short trip. An alarm that is off does nothing.
Walk round your home at night. Put a light, or a solar motion light, over any dark corner, side passage or door.
Play back yesterday's video. If there is none, the camera or the recorder needs attention.
Ask your alarm company how to test it, and when the backup batteries were last changed. Do not switch off the power to test it.
Close the gate behind you. Lock sliding doors and windows, even when you are at home.
Thieves know the usual hiding places. Leave a spare key with someone you trust.
Tall plants next to a wall or window give cover and a way to climb. Trim them so you can see out and neighbours can see in.
Put your control room, your armed response company and the police (10111, or 112 from a cell phone) into every phone at home.
Each of the ten questions is worth a set number of points. Your answer earns some or all of them. Your score is the points you earned out of the points that apply to your home, shown out of 100. If a question does not apply to you, for example you live in a flat with no driveway, it is left out, so you are not marked down for it. The points and the bands are our own simple choices, not an official standard.
No. It is a short guide based on what you tell us. We have not seen your home, tested your alarm or visited your area. A technician can do that properly in a site visit.

Ask to see the company's PSIRA registration certificate, and check it on the PSIRA website. You can also ask whether the company is a member of SAIDSA, the industry body for alarm and response companies.
